Saba Centra Enables University of North Carolina at Charlotte to Deliver Engaging, Interactive Distance Learning Programs

Professors and Students Participate in Virtual Classrooms that Promote Collaboration and Learning Regardless of Location

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif.—March 25, 2008—Saba Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: SABA), the premier people management software and services provider, today announced that the University of North Carolina (UNC) Charlotte, the fourth largest of the 16 institutions within the University of North Carolina system, is using Saba Centra to provide interactive distance education programs. By using Saba Centra, UNC Charlotte is able to provide its students with an easy-to-use, engaging online classroom experience that enables them to complete instructor-led certification and degree programs regardless of where they are located.

Distance education at UNC Charlotte is focused on the delivery of a select number of programs, including baccalaureate completion programs, master degrees, graduate certificates and teacher licensure programs. These programs are taught by the same faculty who teach on-campus programs, so by incorporating Saba Centra, professors are able to connect remote students from live lectures, enabling real-time interaction and collaboration. Saba Centra features that help UNC Charlotte professors engage students include: Webcam capability, breakout rooms for group work during a main lecture, session recording and playback for future discussion, whiteboards for real-time or post-session markup, and application sharing that allows professors to share information directly from the desktop.

“UNC Charlotte’s distance learning programs are very successful and enable students wherever they are located to advance their education without having to travel long distances to attend class,” said Sam Eneman, Saba Centra administrator in the Center for Teaching and Learning at UNC Charlotte, “Saba Centra provides us with an easy-to-use, online classroom environment that makes distance learning fun and interactive. We look forward to our continued use of Saba Centra and the new ways that we can incorporate it to advance our programs at the university.”

In addition to its distance learning programs, Saba Centra is also increasingly being used as part of regular lectures at UNC Charlotte.  For example, one professor in the military science program conducts his lecture on campus with several students participating from other universities, removing the need for him to travel long distances to conduct his class. Professors also use Saba Centra to conduct real-time, online office hours as well as collaboration and problem solving among peers.

“Saba Centra is a powerful conferencing and collaboration solution that fosters community and interaction among students and professors,” said Gabi Schindler, chief marketing officer for Saba.  “UNC Charlotte is a great example of how universities can use Saba Centra to make distance learning highly interactive to create a rich, online classroom experience for students, on or off campus.”
